Parquet Flooring with Design - Livadia Palace, Crimeea

From France to Crimeea. The Livadia Palace has been the summer retreat of czar Nikolas II and his family. Later the Yalta Conference was held there in 1945.

One of the rooms that was Mr. Roosevelt's study has a design parquet flooring that is of interest to our blog especially that some of the designs are familiar to us. The parquet flooring is made of parquet panels with a certain design - not something special I would say - surrounded by a basic hardwood floor border and in the middle they have fit a hardwood floor medallion - a star surrounded by two frames.

No indication of the age of this work.

Note: the Livadia Palace has another rooms where parquet flooring panels with design are present and where the design is more refined than in the Roosevelt room.

Parquet Flooring with Inlays - Restoration Work, Bordeaux, France - Part I

After almost two years of publishing absence I am coming back with a first article of a restoration work including parquet border inlays located in France's Bordeaux by one of our FB friends at Infinity Parkett.

The work to be restored is a parquet flooring with a border inlay where the age left its marks. The parquet flooring consists in a Point d'Hongrie layout surrounded by a border inlay with a Greek key pattern.

The initial state of the parquet flooring - image below:

The border inlay pattern is worked at a reduced thickness. We do not have information whether this parquetry work has been restored before this stage or not.

The corners of the border are cut in round shapes and they have used a floral pattern to complement the main body design.

Another image showing the parquet flooring border pattern from a different angle:

The original wood species were Framire, Ebony, Mahogany and Oak. During restoration some replacements took place bringing Satinwood and Wenge as replacements.

Other relevant images of the restoration work:

And a few final images showing the restored work:

Parquet with design - France - Hôtel de Lesdiguières

The Hôtel de Lesdiguières is a 17th century building located in France/ Grenoble.
The parquet flooring with inlays that can be seen in this hotel is a 19th century work. The design belongs to Jean-François Hache (a marquetry creator) and it is said to have been executed during the 18th century.

A few nice images below:

Parquet Floor Inlay - Yusupov Palace, Sankt Petersburg, Russia

Parquet. Again in Russia. The Yusupov Palace is a must visit with reference to parquet flooring designs. But it is not the only one. Other palaces have their own designs. It was, most probably, a competition between extremely rich people at the time to have their palaces installed with the best parquetry inlay designs.

Parquet Flooring Design - Rossborough House, Ireland

The Rossborough House has been completed in 1750. The parquet flooring installed in the saloon is a remarkable piece of old work. Made of Mahogany and Satinwood. The room has a 33 x 26 ft. (10x 8 metres) size. We don't have a date for the parquet flooring, unfortunately. For example as the official site - www.rossboroughhouse.ie - mentions the Genovese velvet in the same room is dated 1870.

Parquet Border Inlay - Milan, Italy

Milan, Italy. An apartment with an old parquet floor arrangement (here we have a Herringbone layout) displaying also a parquet floor border inlay. A classic parquet flooring installation. Impossible to verify the time details related to the parquet floor because - as happens so frequently - the parquet flooring is a side of non-interest in articles about interior design.

Donatella Versace's House - Parquet Panels with Design

A place where the wood has been used in the form of parquet panels - Donatella Versace's house. The rest of the room has not been neglected. The below images show two parquet panels patterns.

Chevrons or Point d'Hongrie Parquet Flooring

I have been frequently encountered (on various places) people that take the Herringbone parquet flooring arrangement as Chevrons.

I have to say that today the parquet flooring is less known (and used) than it should be.

Two images of Chevrons (in France called Point d'Hongrie) below from the eclecchic blog.

Parquet Flooring in The House with High Ceilings

I have recently discovered a set of images about a house with high ceilings on a blog I sometimes visit - the eclecchic.

The house features a few parquet flooring arrangements - starting with the simple Herringbone to parquet panels framed by parquet borders.

Even the kitchen benefited by the a solid installation (parquet panels with design + parquet border).

Unfortunately I wasn't able to find any information about the location, year of the house.

St. Petersburg Russian Palaces - The Place of Exquisite Parquetry Works

If somebody wants to see a collection of fine parquet works one place to go (or view) is St. Petersburg and its palaces. The small to large compositions (the most expensive parquetry option) are available for visitors. Fortunately some of them do appreciate the floor beneath their feet and take pictures we all can share.
